Seal of Fire

Read Song of Songs 1:1 through 8:14

Published: Apr 30, 2017

The Song of Songs is a lovely poetic portion of Scripture. The “he” and “she” speakers refer to a bridegroom and his bride. Besides the obvious connection with the passion of married love, the story holds a deeper truth about a divine Bridegroom and the Church.

Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame (Song of Songs 8:6).

In biblical times, seals usually identified an object as being the property of the owner. In today’s passage, the seal is the bride herself. With passionate love she wishes to be near her bridegroom, sealed for all eternity.

As the bride of Christ, the Church should have the same longing for the Bridegroom: to be sealed upon His heart and protected by the arm of His power. The Bridegroom has also placed a seal of fire over our hearts. We can feel His fiery embrace in our souls—and we desire to return that love—with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Thought for Today: Love is deep commitment, but it is also burning passion.
